It’s that time of year again for our Sora Sweet Reads summer reading program! It runs from May 18th to August 24th.
Students can enjoy simultaneous reading during the summer! Find your favourite reading spot and discover a new adventure, learn a new hobby or become a detective in a mystery novel. The world is your oyster on Sora!
But why should I read when summer vacation beckons?
The Slump
SUMMER READING LOSS is cumulative. If left unchecked, students can lose more than 18 months of learning by the 6th grade due to the cumulative “summer slide”.
- Decoding & Fluency: Up to 45% of students experience declines in reading decoding skills, and 25% experience drops in reading fluency over the summer break.
- The “Top 1%”: Students who read over the summer build vocabulary and maintain comprehension, giving them a significant leg up at the start of the school year.
How Can I Prevent Reading Loss?
- The “6-Book Rule”: Research shows that lower-achieving students who self-select and read just 6 books over the summer maintain their reading achievement levels compared to the spring.
- Student Choice: A massive 92% of kids say they are more likely to finish a book if they pick it out themselves.
- Access is Key: Approximately 20% of students don’t read any books at all over the summer, often due to a lack of access to reading materials. With Sora available all summer, 24 hours a day, this won’t be an excuse! Sign in today to get reading and earn some badges. Set your reading goal on Sora, and this tutorial will help you!
Discover a new book series that will keep you reading beyond your goals!! If you need help finding books, reach out to your friendly librarian at your school or public library.
Happy Reading!
