Core Competency Packs – What are they?

The Core Competencies are intellectual, personal, social and emotional proficiencies all students need to engage in deep, lifelong learning.

There are three categories of core competencies: Communication, Thinking, and Personal and Social Awareness.

The Communication competency is about how we share and exchange ideas with others. It includes the skills and habits we use to express ourselves, connect with people, and get things done. Through communication, students learn, develop new ideas, and share their thoughts in meaningful ways.

The Thinking competency is about how we use our minds to learn and understand new ideas. It helps students take what they learn in different subjects and turn it into deeper knowledge. This includes problem-solving, creative thinking, and being aware of how they think (metacognition). Students use these skills to process information from different sources, including their own thoughts, feelings, and experiences, to develop new insights.

The Personal and Social competency helps students understand themselves and their role in the world. It includes skills for building confidence, caring for others, and being a positive part of their community. This competency supports students in thriving as individuals and achieving their goals while developing strong relationships with others.

The Core Competency book packs offer a convenient way for parents to explore these important topics with their children from grade Kindergarten to grade seven.
